Van Dongen et le Fauvisme (Van Dongen and Fauvisme.) Paris: La Bibliothèque des Arts Lausanne, 1971. First edition hardcover with dust jacket and slip case. A beautiful book on Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) a Dutch-French painter who belonged to a small group of artists called Les Fauve (The Wild Beasts.) This group emphasized painterly qualities and strong color over realistic values retained by the Impressionists. Van Dongen painted dancers, singers and masquerades giving him the reputation for his sensuous portraits of women. He became a very successful portraitist with society women because he painted them to look thinner and to make their jewelry look bigger.
