Ford, Gerald R. A Vision for America. California: Lord John Press, 1980. First edition presentation copy signed by Ford. Laxalt, Paul. The Nominating of a President. Reno: Native Nevadan Publications, 1985. First deluxe edition, un-numbered and unsigned. These two works are a great testament to the presidencies of Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. A Vision for America is signed by Ford on the last text page in blue ink pen. This first presentation edition is restricted to only 500 copies. The Nominating of a President by Paul Lexalt is a first deluxe edition and one of only 200 copies. Both works are housed together in a custom made slipcase. Gerald Ford presented his speech, A Vision for America, to the National Republican Convention in 1980 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The only president to have held the position without being elected to as either President or Vice President, Ford ascended to the presidency after both Vice President Agnew and President Nixon resigned. He delivered his speech shortly before Ronald Reagan accepted the Republican presidential nomination and just after declining to be Reagan’s running-mate. Paul Laxalt, an attorney and politician, was the only individual to nominate a person three times for president. He delivered a speech in favour of Reagan in 1976 although Gerald Ford won the nomination. Due to his close relationship with Reagan, Laxalt was often called the “First Friend” during the Reagan administration and recalls the speech he gave in support of his friend in 1976 and then nominated him formally in 1980 and 1984. In his The Nominating of a President, Laxalt writes briefly of the moments just before the election speeches and then provides the transcript of each of his three speeches. Together these two works set a scene for the moments before Ronald Reagan began his national path to the presidency of the United States of America and some of the last political acts of Gerald Ford’s career. Condition: Both books are in very good condition. A Vision for America has dark blue cloth boards with a silver gilt facsimile signature of Ford on the front cover. Ford’s blue ink signature in the back of the book is clear and legible. The book’s deckled pages are clean and bright. The Nominating of a President has bright red cloth boards with gold gilt lettering. The pages are also clean and bright. Both books are presented in a custom built archival slipcase decorated with a Gerald Ford’s photo. Dimensions: 10.5” H x 6.75” W x 1.125” D (with slipcase).
