Rebound in full Moroccan leather, with raised bands, gilt tooling and titles to spine, and marbled endpaper. Presented with a new archival cloth slipcase with Churchill's portrait and gilt embossed signature. Presented is a rare, three volume set of The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill, compiled by Charles Eade and published by Cassell & Company Ltd. in 1951. The set is signed and dated “Winston S. Churchill, 1959” in black ink on the half title page of Volume III. This first edition set is presented exquisitely rebound in full Moroccan leather, with gilt tooling and gilt titles to the spine, and a new archival cloth slipcase to house all three volumes. Few books are as representative of Churchill’s literary and leadership aptitude as his speeches. Churchill's preeminence as a historical figure is a result of his indispensable leadership during the Second World War into the beginning of the Cold War, when his oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world to fight for democracy. Churchill once said, “Of all the talents bestowed upon men, none is so precious as the gift of oratory. He who enjoys it wields a power more durable than that of a great king. He is an independent force in the world.” The collected speeches in this three volume set “form a contemporary history of the conflict in which [Churchill] was the chief architect of victory.” Beginning with “a characteristic warning in May of 1938 of the dangers confronting the world from the revival of German militarism and the rise of Hitler... these speeches carry the story through the Munich agreement, the outbreak of the war; the succession of Mr. Churchill to Premiership; the fall of France; the year the British people stood alone-- their ‘Finest Hour’; the German attack on Russia and the Japanese attack on America which brought, at last, powerful allies to share the fight which Britain had carried on for so long; the glorious campaigns in North Africa; the liberation of Europe; the downfall of dictators; the first atom bomb; and the final victory of the United Nations” (Eade, 1951). The story closes with Churchill’s final review of the war and a survey of the future in his first major speech as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons. Churchill’s speeches were originally published in seven volumes between 1941 and 1946, edited by Randolph Churchill and compiled by Charles Eade. This “Definitive Edition” was published later in 1951 and contains certain speeches not published in the original seven volumes but, “to which time and subsequent events have added importance.” Other speeches “have been deleted now time has reduced their significance” (Eade). The speeches are linked together with brief notes of key battles and events, which help form a more complete chronological story. CONDITION: Very good condition. First edition. The books themselves are in very fine, nearly new condition. Pages are clean and paper is healthy. Volume III has been signed and dated on the half title page, “Winston S. Churchill 1959”. Signature legible, in black ink. All three volumes are rebound in full Moroccan leather, with gilt titles, gilt stamps, and raised bands to spine, gilt facsimile signature to the front boards, and new marbled endpaper. Top edge git. The volumes are presented together in a custom-made archival cloth slipcase with a portrait of Churchill and a gilt embossed facsimile signature on the front. Slipcase is lined and includes a ribbon pull.
