Signed by Mitchell, First edition, First printing. This first edition, first printing of Edgar Mitchell’s The Way of the Explorer: An Apollo Astronaut’s Journey Through the Material and Mystical Worlds is signed and inscribed by the astronaut on the half title page, “To Sandra, Edgar Mitchell 3/198.” The signature is authenticated by James Spence Authentication, LLC and includes the certification number on a card inside the front cover. Published in 1996 by G. P. Putman’s Sons, the book retains its original dust jacket. It is presented in a custom matching slipcase. Edgar Mitchell was one of the few men to ever walk on the Moon. Along with Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa, Mitchell was aboard the Apollo 14 and in 1971, landed the spacecraft on the Moon with a specific mission: explore the “Fra Mauro” region. By the time the crew left to return to Earth, they had conducted geology investigations, collected surface samples, determined future landing sites, took extensive photographs, and conducted a variety of other tests. In the end, the three men collected and brought back 94 pounds of rocks and soil to distribute to many countries for testing on Earth. In his book, Mitchell gives his personal account of the third manned mission to the Moon as well as his own profound realizations. It includes stories of his life, the space mission, and his theoretical contemplations in the following decades after the Apollo 14 changed his world view forever. Mitchell’s thought-provoking attempt to reconcile science and religion is written with an abundance of personal voice and is juxtaposed with descriptions of his first-hand experiences as an astronaut. Condition: Overall fine condition. The signature on the half title page is in clear, dark ballpoint pen. The binding is tight and the pages are clean and bright. Some minor bumping to the spine. The dust jacket has one small crease but otherwise is in fine condition. The book is housed in a custom archival black slipcase decorated with a photo of Mitchell set into a recess.
