Stated first edition hardcover with dust jacket. 320 pp. A beautiful coffee table book about The White House. It showcases the historic furniture and decorative accessories, including silver, glass, porcelain, and textiles, along with purchasing habits of the first families. The book tells how Theodore Roosevelt swept away all traces of the 19th century interiors including a Tiffany glass screen that spanned the entrance hall. It reveals documents about James Monroe ordering precious objects from France in 1817, and why presidents after this were encouraged to restrict their purchases to American products.
