Dumas, Alexandre. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1893-1894. 8 Volume Set. Presented in period ¾ brown leather and green cloth boards, with gilt tooling and titles to spines, and a new archival cloth slipcase with ribbon and photo of Dumas inlaid on the front. With a tipped-in signed note by Dumas, dated August 7,1813. This is an eight volume, 3/4 period brown leather and green cloth bound set of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novels, to include The Count of Monte Cristo in four volumes, The Three Musketeers in two volumes, and Twenty Years After in two volumes. Little, Brown, and Company, based in Boston, published this eight volume book set from 1893-1894. Volume I of The Count of Monte Cristo includes a handwritten and signed note by Dumas that has been laid into the volume, beautifully written and signed in French by the famous author. The autographed note, signed “Ale. Dumas,” authorizes Mr. Bruston to represent Dumas at the Ministry of the Interior and to receive a message on his behalf. Dumas mentions the Ministry of the Interior several times in his novel The Count of Monte Cristo. In the novel, Secretary to the Minister of the Interior Lucien Debray provides investment information and is responsible for the independent wealth of Baron Danglars, the mastermind behind Edmond Dantes imprisonment. The document is one page, written while Dumas was in Brussels, and is dated August 7, 1813. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a distinguished French novelist of such historical classics as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, and The Man in the Iron Mask. His works have been translated into many languages, and he is one of the most widely read French authors. The three novels in this eight volume set were all originally published as serials. The Count of Monte Cristo was originally published in the Journal des Débats in eighteen parts. Serialization ran from August 28, 1844 to January 15, 1846. The first edition in book form was published in Paris by Pétion in 18 volumes, with the first two volumes issued in 1844 and the remaining sixteen in 1845. The Three Musketeers was first serialised from March to July 1844, during the July Monarchy, and it’s sequel, Twenty Years After, was first serialized from January to August 1845. CONDITION: Very good condition. Eight volumes, bound in 3/4 brown leather and green cloth, with gilt titles and stamping to spines, exquisite green and gilt marbled endpapers. Internally, books are clean, without marks, stains, or issue. Volumes are presented in an archival custom green cloth slipcase, with ribbon and inlaid portrait of Dumas on the front board. Tipped-in autographed note to Volume I of The Count of Monte Cristo. Note is in fine condition, having been tipped into the first free page. Written in black ink, partially faded to brown, but still very legible. Paper has light toning but is healthy, with no stains.
