Man in Cosmos ring by Björn Weckström

About the Item

Original ring by Björn Weckström. The shank is made of sterling silver and would best fit a ring size 7,5 / 8. However, due to the design of the ring, it would be comfortable worn by anyone, on any finger (except maybe the smallest). The head is composed of a big acrylic ball with air bubbles floating between the hands of a human-like silver-made figure. It has yellow and green details inside the head. Björn Weckström is a Finnish designer and sculptor (born 1935). Formed at the Helsinki Goldsmith School, he started designing with a typical Scandinavian Minimalist approach, but soon found his own particular style. He mainly uses of acrylic, gold, silver and semi precious stones. Often asymmetrical, mixing rough and matt surfaces with shiny ones, his creations have a bio organic feel. Taking inspiration from nature, both from mineral phenomenon and living creatures, he infuses his designs with a particular touch that can give them an almost alien look. His most famous piece was probably the Planetoid Valleys necklace, worn by Princess Leia (played by Carrie Fisher) in the Star Wars movies. He has realised several sculptures for the city of Helsinki and has been awarded many international prizes and honours, including the Ordine della Stella d’Italia and the Lunning Prize. He has had more than 60 exhibitions since the start of his carrer. The ring is stamped.

This stool was made in 1936 for the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum. Made of Japanese cherry wood and seagrass. Today, you can still see the original benches made for this museum. Yanagi Soetsu (1889 – 1961), also known as Yanagi Muneyoshi, was a Japanese art critic, philosopher, and founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement in Japan in the late 1920s and 1930s. His son, Sori Yanagi, was a renowned industrial designer. In 1916, Yanagi made his first trip to Korea out of curiosity about Korean crafts. The trip led to the establishment of the Korean Folk Crafts Museum in 1924 and the coining of the term mingei by Yanagi, potters Hamada Shoji (1894–1978) and Kawai Kanjiro...
