Army and Navy lawn tennis box. A very rare 'Army & Navy Lawn Tennis' box. The polished pine equipment box, now empty, is painted with coloured stripes on the outside of the box, the interior of the lid having three lithograph labels applied to it. The central label has the title on it and showing a game of tennis taking place. The left hand label has a diagram showing the construction of the court according to the rules issued and authorized by the 'Marylebone Cricket Club, and The All England, Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. 1878'. The right hand label has the printed rules and the original contents of the box when first sold. The contents label reads 'This set contains} 4 Best Lawn Tennis Bats, Press to hold the Bats. 6 Covered & 12 Plain India Rubber balls, Poles Jointed Brass Feruled &c.
