Set of (6) Child's Lithographed Alphabet Nesting Blocks, American, Circa 1910

About the Item

This is a larger set of colorful early 1900's lithographed blocks (six blocks and 32" tall, with 4 1/2" base block; versus 5 blocks). Considered an early learning device, these turn of the century alphabet blocks were made of chromolithographed paper on hard pressed cardboard, with scenes of children's themes seen in fairy tales, or children at whimsical play, and so designed to "stack" them in a particular alphabetical order or spelling game. When finished playing with, they were put away, in descending order, one block inside the other and condensed into the largest block, thus the term "nesting blocks" was used. Look at the excellent detail in the lithography, and some of the children's phraseology used: "See-Saw Up and Down" "Mary and Her Pet Lamb" "The Little General" "Nothing Left for Fido" Judging by the block with the open air touring car "Off for A Joy Ride" (see image) we can date the blocks to about 1910. These are probably of American manufacture by one of the two major toy companies like Bliss or McLoughlin, who produced these educational types of game and toy items. This is a COMPLETE set with all (6) blocks and images on all sides of all of the blocks intact; bright, clear, and colorful (see images), albeit some normal wear to the edges from use and play. There is no restoration or touch up paint to any of the surfaces---they are all original. It is very hard to find a complete set, because of the young age of children using these; they would have damaged or lost a block here and there, due to their rough play; which makes this set unique; a delightful piece of Americana. Dimensions: 32" high (when stacked); the base block is 4 1/2" square x 5 1/2" high. The top block is 2" x 2" x 5". The other blocks graduate in size between those two top and bottom blocks.

"Toby" Jug Still Bank and Biscuit Tin, circa 1910

This is both a still bank and a biscuit tin. It would originally have been sold, filled with biscuits. After all of the cookies would have been consumed, the tin (rather than been thrown away) would have been used as a bank to save money. There is a slot for deposits at the back of the neck at the top (see image). Coins would have been removed by lifting or twisting the snug fitting lid. Toby is nicely hand-painted in pleasing colors of green, blue, gold, and white, with realistic flesh tones to the hands and face. The total height is 6 1/2" while the total width is 6" (includes handle). Diameter at the base is 5". This Toby figured tin was manufactured circa 1911 by the biscuit tin company of Hudson Scott located in Carlisle, England. It is marked at the bottom "Hudson Scott & Sons Ltd. Carlisle, England." It has crossover appeal into three categories of collectors. It would be a welcome addition to both the still bank collector and the biscuit tin collector...

American Pottery Pig Bank, Circa 1880's

American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...
