About the Item

This historic, 19th century German red stag trophy is crafted with a hand carved polychrome Black Forest plaque featuring full cap, decorative plate hardware, Fürst Pless hunt horn and Hirschfänger. The carving at the bottom of the plaque represents Frederick Wilhelm, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and includes his family crest on the shield below his waist. The decorative plate on the skull also references the Grand-Duke and includes a date of 1889, commemorating the hunts of that year. Both the hunt horn and "deer catcher" or Hirschfänger are family heirlooms. The horn and knife are suspended by green leather straps which hang from the carving of Frederick Wilhelm. The colors in the plaque include blues, greens and reds as well as gilt accents. The theme of the plaque is in the traditional, Black Forest style, showing acorns, oak leaves and other natural elements. Please see all images for more details. Overall measurements of this piece are 58" W x 68" H x 24" D. The plaque is 21" W x 30" H. The total length was taken from the highest antler tip to the bottom of the horn & knife hanging below the plaque. The depth is the distance from antler tip to the wall. The horns on this piece are removable, to allow for easier transport and are supported by steel pins and brackets fitted inside the cap which are secured to the plaque. We encourage professional art-installers when hanging these magnificent trophies to ensure safety. Part of The European Hunt collection, this collection of antique hunting trophies has been examined and appraised by James Supp of Coronado Trading Co., who is best known for his work with the PBS production "Antiques Roadshow." All pieces in this collection have been examined and appraised and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
