Headdress from Papua New Guinea Made from Cowrie Shells and Red Seeds, Mounted

About

Headdress from Papua New Guinea made from cowrie shells and red seeds applied to traditional macramé fiber. Traditionally this type of ceremonial headdress also served as a form of currency and was often included in wedding dowries. The monetary value relates to the number of specific shells used, typically cowrie and clams. The headdress is a dramatic decorative piece when presented on the black base but it is also functional and the perfect accessory to make a dramatic entrance at an event! The actual height of the headdress is 26" without the base.
