1817 Portrait of Napoleon by Denzil Ibbetson

About the Item

Profile portrait print of Napoleon by Denzil Ibbetson (1775-1857). Ibbetson was one of the British officers who sailed in Napoleon's convoy, in 1815, to St. Helena, the island where Napoleon was exiled and incarcerated for the rest of his life. Ibbetson, along with being a ranking officer, was an artist and he remained with Napoleon through much of his exile on st. Helena. Napoleon died in 1821. The British political cartoon shows Napoleon and four of his fellow officers rendered in profile. The print was originally published on May 1, 1817. The print retains vertical pencil inscriptions by a previous owner identifying who the other four men who are flanking Napoleon. The four men who were in exile with Napoleon on St. Helena were General Henri-Gatien Bertrand, General Emmanuel de Las Cases, General Charlestristan de Montholon, and General Gaspard Gourgaud. Charles Sheeler, bookseller, has incorrectly attributed this piece to George Cruikshank. The piece retains the label from the book and print seller. It has been confirmed that the artist was Officer Denzil Ibbetson. The framing treatment consists of simple dark wood molding with the piece under glass. The print has not been viewed out of the frame. The print is in good overall condition with some staining and foxing along the margin and light creasing due to age. Light fading. Wear is consistent with age. The overall framed measurements are approximately .63" deep x 16.88" wide x 10.5" high. The sheet measures approximately 15.75" wide x 9.5" high. The plate surface image measures approximately 13.75" wide x 6" high.
