About the Item

19th Century Funerary Hatchment for Sir Henry Oglander, 7th Baronet of Nunwell Azure ground shows, a stork between three cross-croslets fitchee or, with Red Hand of Ulster canton of a baronet impaling Argent, a fesse gules between three eagles displayed sable a bordure of the second (Leeds), bellow the motto "Servare munia Vitae" Oil on canvas, with its pine lap jointed frame and original ebonised finish, age related discolouration, stains and craquelure to the painted surface along with a handful of small tears (as shown within the photos) totally unrestored and original. The canvas is slightly loose with the frame. 200/200/2.5cm Provenance: Parnham House, Dorset. The Estate of the late Roger Peers (1932-2023), Curator of the Dorset County Museum between 1959 and 1992. Sir Henry Oglander was born to Sir William Oglander, 6th Baronet of Nunwell House, Isle of Wight and Parnham House, Dorset and his wife Maria Anne Fitzroy, daughter of George FitzRoy, 4th Duke of Grafton. In 1845 Sir Henry married Louisa Leeds, a daughter of Sir George William Leeds, 1st Baronet. In 1854 Sir Henry was appointed High Sheriff of Dorset. He died in 1874, the last of the Oglander baronets. He was buried in St. Mary's Church, Brading, Isle of Wight (alongside many of his ancestors) and has an arts and crafts style tomb, featuring this crest, which is also displayed on one of the stained glass windows that show the various arms of members of the Oglander family.
