About the Item

This large advertising panel for Codorniu cava was designed during the 1930s and it clearly symbolises Art Nouveau design. It consists of 20cm by 20cm tiles. This panel was part of an architectural salvage project undertaken by ourselves and clearly defines an important art historical moment in pop culture when wine and liquor companies were using devise and aesthetic ways to advertise their brands. Today, Codorniu wine and cava is a symbol of Spanish culture as it is one of the oldest family businesses still in operation. The Cordorniu family started producing wine in the 16th Century, however it wasn't until 1872 under the influence of Josep Raventos that it started to produce cava. This was the first time in Spain that this had been produced. The tiled panel was manufactured in Valencia by Burjassot and the company's attribution mark is on the tiled poster, as shown in the photos. This panel is unique because it was specifically designed but also it represents an important part of Spanish history. The panel is in overall good condition. There are two to three tiles that have chips and cracks running through them as shown in the photos. The glaze is in a good condition, there is some discoloration in the glaze in places especially the white as shown in the photos. Slight scratches here and there but this kind of wear is consistent with age and usage. Please view the photos as they form part of the condition report.
