About the Item

The upper right-hand corner of your laptop or the opening screen on your ever-present phone tracks your every fleeting moment. But there was an era, approximately a century ago, when time earned more fanfare in everyday life. The bright idea, as in the handsome wood “scrolling” example here, was called a “Perpetual Calendar.” Without doubt, this addition to one’s study or place of work presented the owner’s tasteful character more forcefully than, say, the insurance salesman’s flimsy paper calendar dropped off annually. That one might feature 12 pictures of minimally clothed females, “Miss January” through “Miss December.” Instead, a person could proudly showcase this stylish, windowed box, equipped with a series of four paper rolls (one each for the day, the month, the date, and the year) to subtly convey one's solidity and good sense. Just a turn of only two rolls each day reliably kept you right on top of things—perpetually. Very few were made, and fewer still have survived.
