Art Deco Bakelite Streamline Inkwell Desk Tidy, c1930

About the Item

Original 1930s Art Deco Streamline Bakelite Inkwell. Made by Esterook Hazell Pens Ltd and marked London made In England, 'dip well' Fountain well No 427. There are two inkwells made from clear glass with plastic inserts, one slightly discoloured ( see pics) and a two holes for pens and a pen rest. This is a great example of streamline Art Deco design with it's smooth flowing lines, a piece that can't be mistaken for any other era. The Bakelite is in great condition and free from any damage or discoloration. BIO Esterbrook was created in 1856 by a Cornish Quaker, Richard Esterbrook. He was a stationer by trade and had seen in Britain the move from hand cut quill pens to the steel nibs with their consequent advantages. In 1947 the Company bought out John Mitchell (this company having been established in 1822 as the World's first manufacturer to cut nibs by machine) and the American Esterbrook Company acquired Hazell pens, the total organization becoming The Esterbrook Pen Co. 1953 saw Esterbrook America take over Cushman & Denison, who had launched the Flo-Master refillable marker in 1951 and in 1960 Esterbrook Pens and Cushman & Denison in the U.K. were merged.

Art Deco Bakelite "Fish Themed" Still Bank, American, circa 1930
Located in Incline Village, NV
This very unique still bank is a "must have" for the discerning still bank collector, in that it is made of bakelite, in addition to it having a fish theme; only a couple of other banks depict a fish. American and probably manufactured around circa 1930, (making it an Art Deco piece), this pre-war bank, though unmarked, is undoubtedly a bakelite product; that company having been formed in 1922, utilizing the discovery and patent of bakelite in 1907 and 1909 respectively. Art Deco collectors would find this piece highly decorative and "period" compatible. This fish bank is in excellent and all original condition. The bank is rare in and of itself, but another element that makes it particularly scarce is the fact that, other than the old "knife in the slot" there was no way to remove the coins once the bank was filled without smashing it apart and destroying it. Great gift for that February/March pisces birthday. Dimensions: 8 1/4" long x 5" high x 2 1/8" wide Note:I am a leading specialist in the field of vintage coin banks...

A plaster design study attributed to an artist designer at the Hill Auto Body Metal company based in Cincinnati Ohio . The company specialized in streamline equipment for airplanes and would periodically go into the automotive field with race cars and streamline bodies . This study may be based on the 1932 rear engined teardrop car called the Arrow Plane for customer Lyman Voelpel a wealthy Chicagoan and may have served as inspiration for six McQuay-Norris Cars built during that period and into 1934. The bodies were aluminum over a steel and wooden frame work and has Ford under pinning's including suspension , brakes and V8 engines...
