About the Item

A wonderful piece of social history from the early 20th century, approx 150 original photographs taken by Frederick Thomas Daws of London Zoo. Frederick Thomas Daws was a Born in 1878, Daws found his true vocation early in life, exhibiting his paintings, "Companions in Trouble," at the Royal Academy at the young age of eighteen. In 1896, and in 1897 he had two others accepted. Like Binks, Daws painted many of prize dogs of well known dog fanciers. Perhaps best known among them was Mrs. Campbell-Inglis, for whom he completed many portraits of her famous poodles over a period of some twenty years. F. T. Daws also worked in bronze and many of his models were reproduced in porcelain. He was a master of canine anatomy, and his bronzes, while little known, are important records of top-winning show dogs. In 1930 he became the main artist at the Royal Doulton Works for their Champion Dog Models Frederick Thomas Daws's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices up to 18,750 USD The album covered with a blue cloth skin, has stains, abrasions and is faded. Each photo has been mounted in mainly groups of 4/5 and 6's with similar species. It contains everything from Elephants to snakes and all in-between .Each photo is hand labeled by Daws including a Lion with the blurb "Rowland Ward" and also the famous chimpanzee of London Zoo "Jackie" . Foxing and pitting to the thick card pages, it would appear the odd photo is missing but no more than a handful. This album was recently discovered from the estate of Daws this year.
