About the Item

"Gilt Bronze Flagpole – Belgian Rampant Lion, 19th Century" 19th-Century Belgian Gilded Bronze Lion Rampant Flagpole Finial Origin: Belgium Date: Circa 1860–1900 Material: Cast bronze with brass alloy and original gilding traces Dimensions: Height 31 cm; weigth 1.5 kg Condition: Excellent antique condition; rich aged patina with visible traces of original gilding; minor wear consistent with ceremonial use. Description: A rare and finely cast heraldic lion rampant finial, originally mounted atop a ceremonial military or civic flagpole or standard in 19th-century Belgium. This powerful sculpture is executed in solid bronze with a high copper content and features distinct brass highlights, giving it a luminous golden tone enhanced by surviving traces of original gilding. The lion stands in a proud rampant posture with muscular limbs, an expressive open mouth, extended claws, and a dramatically stylized tail — all hallmarks of the Flemish and Brabantine heraldic tradition. The expressive mane and dynamic pose reflect the Romantic historicism popular in Belgian public art and military regalia during the mid-to-late 1800s. The base features a hollow cylindrical mount, consistent with use as a staff or banner finial — likely for a municipal guard, volunteer regiment, or official military unit. Its scale and detailed finish suggest it was designed for prestigious ceremonial use, possibly in royal or civic parades. This piece is not a reproduction — it is a museum-worthy example of Belgian martial symbolism and craftsmanship. A compelling artifact for collectors of militaria, heraldry, or 19th-century European decorative arts.
