A Gold Cantor Brooch from the Independent Order B'nai Abraham, 1904

About the Item

A Gold Cantor Brooch from the Independent Order B'nai Abraham dating back to 1904 is a piece of historical and cultural significance. Independent Order B'nai Abraham (IOBA) was founded in 1896 in New York, the IOBA was a Jewish fraternal organization that provided mutual aid and social services to its members. It aimed to support Jewish immigrants and their families, offering assistance with healthcare, burial, and other communal needs. In Jewish tradition, a cantor (chazzan) leads the congregation in prayer and singing during religious services. The brooch signifies the honor and respect given to a cantor within the community, particularly within the IOBA. The quality of work reflects the importance of the cantor's role and the respect bestowed by the community. Gold also ensures the durability and longevity of the piece, preserving its historical significance. The craftsmanship of the early 20th century is evident in the detailing and finishing of the brooch. The brooch features the name of the cantor on the top cartouche with two hanging chains. One is holding up a shaped cartouche engraved with the words "Ba'al Shacharit" written in Hebrew. The second chain holds a shield-shaped cartouche displaying the initials of the organization and a star of David embellished on the front with musical notes at its center. Two laurel leaf branches tied off with a ribbon adorn the lower part of the shield. On the reverse, is a dedication detailing the services the brooch was presented for, the name of the organization, and the date the brooch was given on; February 7, 1904. The original golden pin is still intact which was used to pin on the front lapel of the garb the chazzan word during services. This brooch is not just a piece of jewelry but a significant artifact reflecting the cultural and social history of the Jewish community in the early 20th century. Given its age and specific association with the IOBA, the brooch is a rare collectible. 8.1g

An Early Charity Container from an Agudath Israel Convention
Located in New York, NY
This unique vintage pushka (charity box) is a rare historical piece from an Agudath Israel convention held in early 20th-century Europe, possibly near Switzerland. The design and inscriptions suggest that it was distributed to attendees as a keepsake and functional charity collection box. The pushka is made of tin, crafted by the European company Gebr. Hoffman, which began producing tins in 1904 in Thun, Switzerland. The two halves of the box fit together seamlessly, ensuring a secure closure. One side features an embossed design resembling an early 20th-century Swiss coin, with a large "1" encircled by a laurel wreath. Located in New York, NY
Folk Art Shabbat table cover, Jerusalem, circa 1900. Embroidered at the four corners with the holy places for Jews in Israel, and with the wailing wall at the center. The Hebrew rectangular text is a traditional song sung by Jews every Friday night upon returning home from synagogue prayer. It signals the arrival of the Jewish Sabbath, welcoming the angels who accompany a person home on the eve of the Sabbath. The words to the song translate as follows: Peace be with you, ministering angels, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Come in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Bless me with peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Go in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. The Hebrew text around the Wailing Wall scene...
