About the Item

Unique set of early Hollywood war movie memorabilia. This group of silent movie artifacts dates back to the 1920s. It is for different reasons that these, mainly unique, items are of historical significance and therefor great collectors items. The Big Parade is a 1925, American silent film directed by King Vidor, starring John Gilbert, Renée Adorée, Hobart Bosworth, Tom O'Brien, and Karl Dane. War movie The Big Parade was one of the greatest hits of the 1920s, ultimately grossing $18–$22 million in worldwide rentals and is sometimes proclaimed as the most successful film of the silent era. In 1992, The Big Parade was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. We will not go into the plot of this famous movie, but its success made many of the actors instant celebrities. Karl Dane became somewhat of a cult figure for his role as a southern cunstruction worker nicknamed 'slim'. This Danish born actor / commedian too became instantly famous for his tall appearance and his funny, facial expressions. So much so that when the movie had been released in the Netherlands it inspired a young Dutch artist from Amsterdam (Riet Mensing) to create a stylized Art Deco sculpture/mask of 'slim'. On the internet we found a picture of 'private slim's face' (see image 4). We believe that this could very well be the image after which the large, signed and dated bronze Art Deco mask was created. Included in this group of memorabilia also are two of the Original 1920s photos of the hand-sculpted clay mask. On the back of these two photos it also reads that this sculpture was handcrafted in the atelier (studio) of the famous Dutch sculptors family Polet. Father Dirk Polet (1866-1946) and especially son (and Expressionist) Johan Polet (1894-1971) were renowned stonemasons in the late 19th century up until the mid-20th century. From the clay mask a mold would have been made and included in this group are the bronze and beautifully patinated mask and an extra specimen of plaster. The vulnerable plaster mask certainly has wear consistent with age, but the heavy bronze mask from 1927 and weighing 25 pounds lbs is of museum quality and condition (it is truly mint). Finally, there is a booklet with the film score with Dutch texts (printed in Amsterdam), a rare (film star edition 6) booklet with over 20 movie scene pictures from the Big Parade (printed in Antwerp, Belgium) and a page from a magazine announcing the death of Karl Dane. Together this important group of Hollywood movie memorabilia will make a great addition to any war or silent movie collection. Displayed in a cabinet or mounted on the wall this group would also look great in a museum or movie theatre.
