WWII Generals Autographs with Bradley, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur, Arnold

About the Item

This is a collage features signatures by five of the most influential U.S. generals in American history. Including signed photos by Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley, signed cards by George C. Marshall and Douglas McArthur, and a signed envelope from HAP Arnold, this collage is an impressive testament to the U.S. Army. Each general is photographed and the work includes an explanatory plaque as well as a five-star pin. Omar Bradley Bradley led more combat troops than any other field commander in American history. The general was considered "the soldiers' general— modest, industrious, above intrigue, the skilled tactician and strategist…” (Drew Middleton, NYT). Bradley led the U.S. First Army during Operation Overlord as Allied forces stormed the beach of Normandy then planned Operation Cobra that ended with the invasion into Germany. Before he retired, Bradly served the nation as the First Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and remains one of the most notable U.S. Army generals to date. Bradley’s inscription at the bottom of his photo reads, “To Mr. and Mrs. John Graham, with best wishes Omar N Bradley.” Dwight Eisenhower Later becoming the 34th president of the U.S., Dwight D. Eisenhower first played a major role in ensuring the Allied victory in WWII. He was appointed Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Most notably, Eisenhower planned and carried out both the successful Allied invasion of Normandy that definitively turned the tide in WWII as well as the invasion of North Africa. In 1948, Eisenhower left active duty and started on a civilian path that would eventually lead him to the White House. Eisenhower’s signed photograph reads, “To Kenneth Browne - A comrade in the E.T.O., with best wishes Dwight Eisenhower.” George C. Marshall Considered one of the most respected military officers in U.S. history, George C. Marshall never actually commanded any troops in battle. His fame comes from his impactful plans and his stellar performance in tasks a modern officer must perform, his diplomacy, and policy-making skills. Marshall served as a Staff Officer in WWI then was appointed Chief of Staff at the beginning of WWII. Despite assisting in the formation of Operation Overlord plans to invade Normandy, Marshall was held back at Washington by President Roosevelt who considered Marshall one of his most valuable resources. After the end of WWII, Marshall developed the Marshall Plan to aid the recovering Western Europe and attempt to protect it from Communism. President Truman asked Marshall to serve as the Secretary of Defense as the Korean War began and his reputation as a competent leader and good character earned him a spot in American history. Douglas MacArthur For more than 60 years, General Douglas MacArthur served his country as a soldier. He achieved the highest acclaim for his exploits as a grand strategist in WWII, commanding the Southwest Pacific Theater and in Korea, leading the United Nations forces during the first nine months of the conflict. MacArthur held the center stage in one of the bitterest civil versus military controversies in the history of the nation. HAP Arnold Hap Arnold was the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force and was instrumental in the planning of aerial attacks against Japan and the daylight bombings raids on Germany in WWII. He was heavily involved with and developed many of the fateful strategic decisions made during WWII. Instructed by the Wright Brothers, Hap Arnold’s pilot career led him to eventually help create the world’s most impressive Air Force. Condition: Overall very good condition. All signatures and inscriptions in the collage are clear and dark. Bradly’s signed photo has one minor crease in the bottom right corner and Arnold’s signed envelope has some minor wear along the edges but neither affect the signatures. Otherwise, the collage has no notable damage. The work has been framed according to the highest conservation standards in a custom built frame.

Offered is a unique collage featuring signatures from some of the greatest captains in history: Claire Chennault, Henry “Hap” Arnold, Hoyt Vandenberg, Carl “Tooey” Spaatz, William “Billy” Mitchell and Edward “Eddie” Rickenbacker. These men are some of the most influential figures in U.S. Air Force history. Each captain was involved in WWI and/or WWII, some were aces who proved the usability and effectiveness of airpower, and others were brilliant leaders who paved the way for U.S. victories and the development of the U.S. Air Force. Presented, is an exciting 1981 color lithograph by William “Billy” Phillips. Titled Through the Back Door, the lithograph depicts an American P-47 Thunderbolt pursuing a Luftwaffe bomber on the famous D-Day of WWII. Also referred to as a “Jug,” the P-47 was the largest and heaviest fighter aircraft powered by only one reciprocating engine. It was armed with four machine guns on each wing making it lethal for ground attacks. The busy scene focuses on the diving P-47 with “Miss Behave” painted on the side, but is full of action throughout the work. Providing a sense of movement, the background is blurred with multiple airplanes both in flight and on the ground. Fire and smoke billow from the field putting the viewer in the middle of the dramatic scene. The artist, William “Billy” Phillips is a renowned aviation and landscape artist. He is well-recognized and has received many awards for his artwork. Early in his career, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordinian Air Force as an artist and later served as the U.S. Combat Artist. The U.S. awarded Phillips the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association’s Americanism Medal.
