An ammonite is an extinct marine animal belonging to the class of squid. Ammonites lived in the seas of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic periods (about 400 to 66 million years ago). They had a distinctive, spiral shell that is often fossil preserved. Ammonites became extinct during the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous, at the same time as the dinosaurs.
