18th Century Walnut Miniature Bureau

About the Item

A very attractive and charming 18th century, George II Period, walnut and oak miniature bureau, having elegant inlaid decoration and original brasswear throughout, the hinged flap enclosing pigeon holes, drawers and well with sliding cover. Much debate is had over the origins of miniature furniture, with many people of the belief that all items were made as apprentice pieces and many other people believing that all items were made as salesmans sample pieces. In reality we believe that miniature furniture in general was produced for a combination of the two purposes mentioned above. This particular piece was certainly made as a travelling salesman's sample piece, due to it being really rather rare to find miniature bureaus of any kind, let alone ones of this stature and level of detail, right down to the sliding well cover. It should also be noted that this lovely piece of antique miniature furniture is in good untouched condition, retaining all of its original brasswear and a superb colour & patina. There are locks to the bottom drawer and fall, however thesse have not been operational for an extremely long time it would seem, probably due to so many years of non use. This is a really lovely, collectable piece and exactly the sort of item which given a chance we would love to keep in our own collection. Circa 1730. Measures: Height 9in. Width 8.5in. Depth 4.25in.

Although there has always been a large amount of discussion and conjecture as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture it will be almost impossoble for a definitive answer to be given for by far the majority of surviving pieces. The two well known and accepted purposes were either as an apprentice piece, meaning that the item may well have been made by a hopeful young man looking to secure himself a job at the local cabinet making workshop and using the piece as an audition for entry, or alternatively as a travelling salesmans sample piece where scale models of the full size items which a workshop could produce were created, allowing the salesman to take them away and use them for taking orders. We believe that this wonderful little antique miniature chest...
