19th c. Bock-Steger Anatomical Brain Model, Germany

About the Item

ABOUT A hand crafted and painted plaster anatomical model of the human brain. Franz Josef Steger and pathological anatomist Carl Ernst Bock collaborated at the University of Leipzig to produce anatomical models for the instruction of students in the 19th century. Such models were either direct casts or sculpted in plaster, porcelain or wax. Steger also explored the early use of plastics. However, it is the plaster models for which he is famous. Shown with life size hand model. CREATOR Bock-Steger, Leipzig. Germany. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1800s. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Plaster. CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor chips throughout. Possible repair on rim, repair date unknown. DIMENSIONS H 10 in. W 10 in. D 3 in. HISTORY Medical educators rely on models to depict anatomical structures in a more efficient format than the cadaver; to move away from the clutter, discomfort, and complexity of a cadaveric dissection; and to clarify characteristics or functions of an anatomical structure that are not readily apparent in situ.
