Austrian Art Nouveau Silver and Enamel Cane by Georg Adam Scheid

About the Item

Austrian Art Nouveau silver and enamel cane by Georg Adam Scheid Austrian, 1872 Height 90cm, diameter 3cm This stunning Art Nouveau walking stick, created around 1900, is the work of the esteemed Austrian silversmith Georg Adam Scheid (1838–1912). After a successful collaboration with fellow artisan Michael Markowitsch, Scheid established his own workshop in 1882, focusing on luxurious objets d’art and high-end collectibles like this cane. His creations were showcased at major events such as the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The cane is crowned with a finely sculpted fig-shaped handle, crafted from silver and rich purple enamel. Encircled by elegantly swirling silver leaves, the design achieves a strikingly realistic effect. The shaft is made from dark hardwood, skilfully carved to mimic bamboo, adding an organic and textured contrast to the handle. A metal ferrule completes the piece. The silver is marked with ‘G.A.S.’ for the maker, accompanied by the ‘Diana’ hallmark, confirming the purity of the silver used. With its remarkable craftsmanship and exceptional design, this walking stick is an outstanding addition to any collection.
