Georgian Antique 18th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest

About the Item

A charming mid-18th century mahogany miniature chest retaining exceptional untouched color and patina with two short and three long drawers and original brass handles raised on original ashaped bracket feet (Much discussion is had over the original purpose of almost all miniature furniture and the simple answer is that we will probably never know what the majority of pieces original intended function was. The two main uses were of course pieces which were made as travelling salesman's sample pieces, which is where a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip on which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from, or alternatively pieces which were produced by apprentices attempting to showcase their skills and gain employment at the cabinet making workshop of their choosing. This particular chest is almost certainly a sample piece due to the undoubted charm and quality. It has certainly aged gracefully and retains such a wonderfully war, untouched colour and patina that it is very much a collectors piece as well as functional little item that is hundreds of years old.) circa 1760 Measures: Height - 9in Width - 7in Depth - 4in.

A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.  There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
