Rare 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest

About the Item

A Delightful And Charming 18th Century Mahogany, George II Period, Miniature Chest Having Superbly Figured Top, Over Unusual Arrangement Of Drawers, Retaining Incredible Original Brass Open Plate Handles, Raised On Original Bracket Feet, Retaining Exceptional Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout. This incredible little miniature chest really is one of a kind. The quality of construction is excellent, with no expense spared and dense, rich mahogany timbers used alongside expensive brass handles. On the subject of the brass handles we have never really seen anything quite like this. There is a lot of brass involved, but they are undoubtedly original to the piece and somehow they seem to just about work and add a real unique feel to the piece. Another interesting and intruguing feature is the lack of a lock on the top right hand drawer, there has never been one, instead it is a sort of secret drawer, only possible to open when using the hidden lever accessed from underneath. This is a feature we really like and another indication of the thought, effort and expense which went into the making of this piece. In terms of whether this is an apprentice piece of miniature furniture, or alternatively a salesmans sample, we actually think perhaps that it is neither, rather just a slightly unique, made to order creation, or even just a skilled cabinet maker using up some leftover materials and making a present for his own family or something similar to that. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure it is in optimum condition before being offered for sale. Circa 1740. Height 11.25in. Width 14in. Depth 8in. A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.  There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
