Mid-Century Spanish Carved Armada Style Model Ship the "Fragata Espanola, 1780"

About the Item

This elegant and majestic frigate model was crafted in Spain, circa 1950. Named "Frigata Espana," the large naval sailboat sits on an integral wooden base decorated with a small plaque which reads "Frigata Espana Ano 1780." The main boat itself features authentic and unique details including many string ringings, spare boats, hanging netting, a steering wheel, and two anchors. The piece of maritime art is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and has a hand painted finish throughout, with the body of the ship painted black and gold details adorning the several guns on either side of the ship. The billowing sails have brown vertical stripes and feature a large crest composed of a double-headed eagle, a crown, and a smaller crest on the chest of the eagle. The model vessel would resonate with sailors or other seafaring enthusiasts. There is evidence that this ship was one of the Spanish ships that fought in the battle of Cape St. Vincent, which took place off the southern coast of Portugal on January 16, 1780 during the American Revolutionary War. It was one of the opening battles of the Anglo-Spanish War, as part of the French Revolutionary Wars, where a British fleet under Admiral Sir John Jervis defeated a greatly superior Spanish fleet under Admiral Don José de Córdoba y Ramos near Cape St. Vincent, Portugal. Measures: 31.5" W x 8.5" D x 24.5" H.

  • Mid-18th Century French Carved Polychrome Statue of Moses in Oak Niche
    Located in Dallas, TX
Crafted in France circa 1760 and resting in a carved oak niche, the figure depicts the prophet Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism and Christianity. Moses is best known from the story in the biblical Book of Exodus and Quran as the lawgiver who met God face-to-face on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments after leading his people, the Hebrews, out of bondage in Egypt and to the "promised land" of Canaan. He is represented with horns on top of his head. The horns came about because of an ambiguity of the Latin version of Exodus 34, 30. After being addressed by God on top of Mount Sinai and given the Tablets of the Law containing the Ten Commandments, Moses descended to his people in the desert. His face was seen to shine with a divine light. (The first Moses with horns was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb; it was based on a description in chapter 34 of Exodus in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible used at that time). The religious and biblical item...
