About the Item
Polychromed wood carvings representing Spanish and French soldiers throughout recent history, Spain, 1940s.
Set of 4 polychromed wooden figures representing different types of Spanish military and infantry positions over the centuries. Made of hand-carved walnut wood, with a layer of plaster. Polychromed, painted and characterized by totally artisanal and manual processes. Great realism in details and colors. Very much in the style of the creations in polychrome wood and plaster of the Spanish School. Small faults, see photos. Signed (see last photo).
Alferez de los Tercios, Spain, 1650: officer responsible for carrying the company's flag in combat and in formations, which gave him a symbolic leadership role and a high responsibility for maintaining the cohesion and morale of the troops. His position was key to discipline and unity, especially in the context of the Tercios, where loyalty to the flag and the king were fundamental.
Arquebusier, Spain, 1680: soldier armed with an arquebus, a muzzleloader firearm that was mainly used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, being fundamental in armies such as the Spanish Tercios to support the troops of pikemen and cuirassiers. There was also the figure of the arquebusier as a manufacturer of firearms.
Husar de Arlabán, Spain, 1833–1840: cavalry regiment of the Liberal army (loyal to Queen Isabella II) during the First Carlist War in Spain, in reference to the battle of the same name. In 1873, during the First Republic, this regiment was renamed the Cazadores de Arlabán Regiment, keeping the name of the battle where cavalry had played a prominent role.
Swabian, 1860: Infantryman in the French army, initially in the service of France and from the Zouaoua Berber tribe of Algeria. It was created from 1830 and was famous for its striking oriental-style uniform, with a short jacket, waistcoat, sash and loose pants.

A group of ten hand carved and painted wooden Napoleonic soldier figures c 1930
Located in Central England, GB
This very rare group of French Napoleonic period soldiers are completely handmade. They have each been finely carved in wood and then hand painted with great detail. Each soldier is portrayed in a different position wearing a full uniform with a backpack, sword and rifle. I have never seen anything remotely similar. This type of model is usually made from cast metal as a production figure and not as an individual one off carved sculpture. These rare figures must have taken many hours of work to produce each one. Together they form a very decorative group which would be a good addition to any military...
