Rare 18th century Micromosaic Plate

About the Item

Rare micromosaic plaque depicting an idyllic Roman landscape. The main subject of this micromosaic is the representation of buildings surrounded by cypresses and trees. Two figures in the foreground are resting. This landscape, with a tree in the foreground and figures in a misty background, is reminiscent of the Arcadian or capriccio landscapes painted by Claude Gelée, known as Le Lorrain. The square shape of the shards making up the sky means that this work dates from the late 18th century. This plaque is set in a 18 carat gold frame and is closed at the back by a tortoiseshell plate. Pewter Purim dish, Germany, late 18th century. The outer rim has wriggle-work engraving stating “and of sending portions one to another and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22). Interspersed between some of the words are depictions of foliage and flowers. Large decorative star in which the very center has three interlocking fish. This dish was used for the custom of sending gifts of food to friends or neighbors during Purim. In Central Europe, nuts and candied or dried fruit were the usual treats extended.
