Small Grand Tour Pietra Paesina (Ruin Marble) Bronze Mounted Plaque or Curio

About the Item

A fine Grand Tour plaque or curio. With a pietra paesina or ruin / ruiniform marble form plaque mounted in a gilt bronze frame with an integral bail. Pietra Paesina or so-called 'Ruins' marble was first discovered in the 16th Century and immediately became coveted as a collector's item because of its strong resemblance to landscapes and ruin forms. Slabs of pietra paesina have been built into jewelry, furniture, and used as decorative elements for many hundreds of years. This plaque very like dates to the Grand Tour (19th Century) era (or even possibly earlier). Simply a wonderful piece for the curio cabinet or Wunderkammer! Date: 19th Century or earlier Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There is some oxidation and rubbing to the gold (particularly to the reverse and edges), some fritting to the edges plaque on the inside of the mount (likely there since its creation). Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Measurements: Length: ca. 3 3/4 in. Height: ca. 2 1/4 in. Depth: ca. 1/4 in.
