Trump Tower Original Architect's Model by Der Scutt

About the Item

Original architect's model for trump tower, 725 5th Avenue, New York, from the estate of the architect, Der Scutt. Scutt was the principal architect while with the firm Swanke Hayden Connell. Der Scutt had previously transformed for Trump the old Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt next to Grand Central station. The model shows 725 Fifth Avenue and the surrounding blocks, 1/32 scale, both sides of 5th Ave. from 55rd Street north to 59th Street. The Tower is in black lacquered acrylic and the surrounding buildings are a sand color. The Lucite box cover is in excellent condition with hardly any scratches. Critics lavished praise on the design of the iconic 58 story tower at the corner of 5th Avenue and East 56th Street which opened in 1983, not only for its structural use of faceted glass, jig-saw windows and series of cascading private terraces which cleverly maximized usage of air rights by visually diminishing its enormous bulk but also for its splendid interior public space which is a multi-level atrium connected by polished bronze escalators, tinted mirrors and abundant use of Breccia Perniche marble including an 80 foot waterfall. This model was used in many presentations by the developer as a visual aid in efforts to persuade the various constituencies to grant extraordinary latitude with respect to exceptions to numerous zoning restrictions. The size of the model including its Plexiglas case makes it suitable for use as a cocktail table either alone or with a glass top. If requested we could fabricate a polished brass or aluminum stand on legs, feet or casters. The scale of trump tower in proportion to the surrounding buildings is accurate with one exception - Trump did not like that the GM building appeared taller than his tower in this model so the model maker literally sawed off several inches from the offending skyscraper.
