About the Item
An extremely good-sounding buffet-style upright antique cylinder music box made by Mojon Manger in Geneva, Switzerland c. 1880.
The fully serviced musical movement features 6 bells, each decorated with colourfully enamelled floral finials. The bells can be engaged and disengaged at will using the lever at the lower left of the cylinder.
The music box plays a selection of 8 popular tunes of the day as detailed on the replacement tunesheet fixed to the inside of the left door. Tunes include ‘The Wedding March’ and ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ as shown in the video. The sound of this music box is excellent, with a bright, lively tone.
The case is veneered in burr walnut and has brass inlay with mother-of-pearl cartouches to both doors, as well as gilt carrying handles to the sides. It also has its original key. The veneer has some imperfections and has had some restoration in some places but it is all commensurate with the age of the piece.
A very nice and wonderful sounding music box.

Swiss Station Cylinder Music Box
Located in New Orleans, LA
Tiny dancers twirl to the melodious tunes produced by this Swiss station cylinder music box. The cylinder is joined by a drum and bells that give richness and depth to the wonderful music the box creates. Music boxes were at the height of fashion in the late 19th century and served as a status symbol for the European gentry. Switzerland was the birthplace of cylinder music boxes and home to the great majority of the most renowned manufacturers. This example, in its finely crafted English walnut case, boasts two combs, allowing the box to play in harmony for a richer, more complex song.

This example, however, does not accept coins. This, combined with its overall quality, complexity and beauty, indicates it was made for a private household of significant means. Today, these ingenious musical masterpieces are highly sought-after by collectors of musical automata...
