About the Item

A very nice quality and unusual antique music box with drum, bell and castanet and two-per-turn format made by Ami Rivenc in Geneva, Switzerland c. 1890. The fully serviced movement features a skin drum with six beaters, five saucer bells mounted in a V formation on a gilt support, and a castanet with four beaters. Each of these orchestral elements can be disengaged and re-engaged at will using the levers to the front of the comb. The winged lion maker’s mark for Ami Rivenc is stamped on the governor. This music box has a two-per-turn arrangement that is rather unusual for an orchestral music box. This means it plays two songs for every rotation of the cylinder, allowing it to play twenty four songs in total. These are a range of both operatic and popular airs of the day, as detailed on the original tunesheet, including William Tell, Rigoletto, Estudiantina, Auld Lang’s Syne, Il Trovatore, and The Mikado. The sound is very good for an orchestral two-per-turn with such a complicated format and large number of tunes. It is housed in a veneered case with a musical motif inlay in various woods to the lid, a music transfer motif to the front of the box, and gilt carrying handles. It is a very unusual and jolly box, with a lovely selection and a fine sound.
