About the Item

This really excellent portable gramophone was made by 'His Master's Voice' Model: 102 made circa 1935 Serial No: B/3 100323 It was retailed by Alfred Imhof Ltd of 112 New Oxford Street, London. This is a de-luxe variant in the rarer blue leathercloth. It was very popular in it's day and now due to it's superb playing quality. HMV 102 is still widely recognised as marking the pinnacle of portable gramophone design. It remained in production, with minor changes, from 1931 until the late 1950s. This model is finished in blue Rexine leathercloth with a matching motor board, the internal fittings are chromium plated. It has got an automatic or manual start/stop, via selector lever. Single spring motor with the 5a soundbox and very proportional tone arm and horn system. Condition: It is in outstanding working condition with no damage and has probably seen only limited use. Dimensions in cm: Height 17 x width 29 x depth 41 Dimensions in inches: Height 7 inches x width 11 inches x depth 1 foot, 4 inches His Master's Voice, abbreviated HMV is a trademark in the music business, and for many years was the name of a large record label. The name was coined in 1899 as the title of a painting of the dog Nipper listening to a wind-up gramophone. In the photograph on which the painting was based, the dog was listening to a phonograph cylinder. This image comes from a painting by English artist Francis Barraud, A.R.A. and titled His Master's Voice. This is a lovely antique Swiss 10 airs Gonçalo Alves cylinder music box, manufactured by Langdorff & Fils, circa 1880. The case is inlaid and crossbanded with floral marquetry and banded decoration.
