About the Item

This is a truly wonderful and rather unique piece. We can't find another quite like it. We were told it is from an Edo period Shinto Shrine dedicated to the deity Inari - a popular deity associated with foxes who were known for protecting the annual rice harvest from threatening vermin. In Japanese mythology, foxes are supposed to breathe out flames which are represented by the flame motif at the top of the drum stand. The drum is gilt-decorated and the stand made of painted and lacquered wood. It can be disassembled into three parts making it easier to transport. Would be a fantastic addition to any Asian or Japanese art or artifacts collection of a very eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Rare and quite special. Approximate dimensions: 48" high, 24" wide, 24" deep. Drum: 17" diameter.

Large Japanese Pottery Charger in the Manner of Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works). Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos). Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics...

Antique Japanese Inro by Shigehide Edo Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
This exquisite four-case lacquered inro was dated to the latter part of 18th century to early 19th century (Edo period) and made by Shigehide. The opposite sides of the inro together features a lavish flower arrangement in a bamboo basket (ikebana). The detailed craftmanship was a true pleasure to behold. Mostly Takamaki-e (high relief) were used to texturize the delicate petals of the chrysanthemums, on which different shades of gold were used to create contrast. Raden (mother of pearl) shells were also used to highlight some leaves, rendering the piece an interesting balance of color and material. The interior was completed in a mottled gold finish. It was signed Shigehide on the bottom with a Kao. There is a small carved rabbit ojime bead...
