About the Item

White grand piano, aluminium alloy, wood, brass by Rippen Pianofabriek N.V., the Netherlands, 1946 (production 1950s). This model is a renown grand piano by the Dutch piano maker Rippen from Ede. The model was a revolution when it was designed in 1946 by J.J. Rippen. The first distinction compared to other piano's from that era is that the Rippen aluminium grand was a right-stringed model as opposed to a cross-stringed. But the most eloquent and innovative element of this piano was the fact that the traditional cast iron frame and the wooden cabinet were replaced by a lightweight construction of an aluminium alloy (silumin), making this grand piano weigh only 210 kg. The use of the aluminium also made the sound of this grand piano rich and full, by which it distinct itself from other mid-century grands. Above that, the form and appearance of this piano is elegant and stately without being obnoxious, a true sign of midcentury Dutch aesthetics. Due to its style, its functionality and especially because of its vibrant and full sound, this model has been used on the S.S. Rotterdam Holland-America Line during the 1950s. This is were the public truly came to admire the fulness of the sound of the Rippen grand. They soon became very popular and were used in various venues such as the Martinikerk in Groningen. The grand aluminium model has only been in production until 1972 due to the high production costs and its availability is therefore limited. This piano has been fully restored and tuned.
