About the Item

Large and beautifully sculptured, 19th century floor lamp with an alabaster shade. This extremely rare and impressive work of lighting art was made and marked by the Amsterdam based foundry of Becht & Dyserinck (since 1867). Lamps of this Amsterdam based studio and foundry are not only extremely rare, they are also of excellent quality. Even H.P. Berlage had some of his designs cast there. This Neoclassical Revival lady sculpture, holding up the water vessel is Dione, the goddess of water. With everything that is going on in the world today, the importance of water for preserving life on our planet was never more topical. This too makes this neoclassical antique very interesting. The size, but also the realistic manner in which her clothes are draped is a rare sight to see and she will light up both your days and evenings. In image 10 you can see the building (on the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam) where this rare lamp was made and sold. If you look closely to the right, you may be able to see the sign of the world famous brewer Heineken. They still are in that same building in Amsterdam. Whomever the first owner of this divine lamp was, he or she was definitely from the upper, upper class of Amsterdam. Mind you, electric lighting was a new thing in the world in those days and only very few people would have had the means to be able to buy a work of lighting art of this size, quality and beauty. This large, rare and fine quality floor lamp is made of cast metal and she weighs about 63 pounds lbs. Apart from some minor wear, this stunning and highly decorative work of lighting art is in excellent condition. She will also look great on a marble or concrete column or pedestal. The alabaster shade too is in excellent condition and it can easily be taken of for safe transportation. This sculptural antique is rewired for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well and when purchased by an American client, we will also attach an American power plug so that she can be used and enjoyed upon arrival.
