About the Item

Barometro aneroide o olosterico in ottone, da tavolo e da parete della fine del XIX secolo, firmato Negretti & Zambra London I 2402. Buono stato perfettamente funzionante. Diametro cm 12 – 4.5 in, spessore cm 5,7 -2.35 in. L'ultima foto è la confezione regalo. Si tratta di un antico strumento di misura il cui organo sensibile alla pressione è una scatola metallica detta capsula barometrica. La capsula si contrae o si dilata in conseguenza dei cambiamenti di pressione e i suoi movimenti sono trasmessi a una lancetta indicatrice tramite un sistema meccanico. La messa a punto di questo tipo di barometro si deve a Bourdon, inventore e industriale francese (Parigi 1808-1884), che aveva fondato a Parigi nel 1835 una fabbrica per la costruzione di macchine a vapore; nel 1849 inventò il manometro metallico, a cui legò il suo nome, e nel 1853 un tipo di barometro aneroide. Curiosità Enrico (Henry) Negretti, nato a Como nel 1817 e morto a Londra nel 1879, emigrò a Londra nel 1829, dove frequentò il London Mechanics Institute, iniziando contemporaneamente l’apprendistato in un laboratorio di strumenti ottici di precisione. Nel 1859 si associò a Joseph Zambra (1822-1897), anch’egli costruttore di strumenti scientifici, e fondarono la Negretti & Zambra Ltd, con numerose sedi a Londra, e si fecero presto una buona reputazione sia in patria che all’estero per l’eccellenza dei loro prodotti. Nei primi anni dell’attività della ditta limitarono la loro produzione agli strumenti meteorologici, o, come li definivano loro, ai “philosophical instruments”. Attorno al 1857 furono incaricati dal governo britannico di effettuare indagini riguardo alla temperatura del mare sulle proprie coste, per chiarire quale influenza avesse la temperatura sulle abitudini e sulle migrazioni dei pesci e quali fossero le stagioni e le temperature più indicate per la pesca. Per tali indagini la Negretti & Zambra mise a punto per l’ammiraglio Fitzroy un termometro a mercurio che si rivelò il più preciso mai realizzato fino ad allora. Verso la fine del XIX secolo diversificarono la loro tipologia di prodotti fabbricando strumenti ottici come telescopi terrestri e astronomici, livelle, teodoliti, mirini, oltre ad apportare ulteriori migliorie a barometri e altri strumenti meteorologici. La ditta passò da padre in figlio fino al 1946.

Torricellian barometer of oak wood, signed Negretti & Zambra London from the second half of the 19th century, complete with reading vernier for checking the pressure variation and thermometer.
