About the Item

Brass aneroid or holosteric barometer, table and wall barometer signed Bourgeois Eng. Opt. 168 Rue de Rivoli Paris from the early 1900s. Good working condition. Measures 12.5x5.8 cm - inches 4.9x2.4. The last photo is the gift box. This is an ancient measuring instrument whose pressure-sensitive organ is a metal box called a barometric capsule. The capsule contracts or expands as a result of pressure changes, and its movements are transmitted to an indicating pointer by a mechanical system. The development of this type of barometer was due to Bourdon, a French inventor and industrialist (Paris 1808-1884), who had founded a factory in Paris in 1835 to build steam engines; in 1849 he invented the metal manometer, to which he linked his name, and in 1853 a type of aneroid barometer. Since ancient times man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict weather patterns. The scientific study of the changes occurring in the atmosphere began in the mid-17th century, in connection with experiments tending to prove the existence of a vacuum, which ancient philosophers denied because "nature abhors a vacuum!".Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, a disciple of Galileo, was the first in 1643 to build an instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure, which he understood to be related to changes in atmospheric weather.
