Bussola da rilevamento magnetico a mano, firmata Henry Browne & Son Ltd Sestrel n. 4094 Made in England Barking & London dei primi del XX secolo. Completa di scatola originale in legno di rovere con maniglie e cerniere in ottone. Misure scatola cm 14,5x15,5x27 – inches 5.8x6.2x10.6. Si tratta di una bussola di piccole dimensioni, in ottone e vetro e impugnatura in legno, tipicamente usata nella navigazione a vela da diporto. E' dotata di un sistema di mira con prisma ottico per ingrandire i gradi posti sulla rosa a otto venti graduata in modo da rendere possibile la misurazione dell'angolo tra la linea di mira e il nord indicato dall'ago magnetico. La bussola è costituita da un recipiente di forma cilindrica in ottone, chiamato mortaio, sul cui fondo è fissato uno stelo di metallo duro, chiamato elemento sensibile, sul quale è appoggiata la rosa dei venti opportunamente vincolata, in modo che lo zero coincida con la polarità magnetica. Per ridurre al minimo l’attrito, il mortaio è stato riempito di liquido a basso punto di congelamento, avente anche lo scopo di smorzare rapidamente le eventuali oscillazioni del complesso e chiuso superiormente da un robusto vetro di protezione e completo di impugnatura in legno. All’interno dell’impugnatura è stato ricavato un vano per l’alloggiamento delle batterie, chiuso all’estremità da un tappo a vite in ottone, mentre sull’impugnatura è fissato un interruttore a scorrimento per accendere e spegnere la lampadina che retroillumina la bussola. Sestrel è un marchio registrato della Henry Browne & Son, che fu una importante ditta inglese produttrice di bussole di grande qualità, inclinometri, sestanti, ecc fondata nella seconda metà del XIX secolo. Il marchio 'Sestrel' è un nome che risulta dalle iniziali delle qualità che il marchio stesso incarna: SEnsitive –STeady – RELiable (sensibile-sicuro-affidabile). Sestrel è infatti un nome sinonimo di qualità e precisione, come è dimostrato dal numero di strumenti con quel marchio, d'epoca e antichi, ancora in uso oggi. I primi cenni storici sull'uso in Europa della forza direttiva magnetica risalgono alla fine del sec. XII o al principio del XIII e attribuiscono agli Amalfitani lo sfruttamento delle proprietà del magnete. La sospensione cardanica fece la sua prima apparizione intorno alla metà del sec. XVI. Una descrizione esatta si ha nel breve compendio “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar”, di Martin Cortés (1551), che dà direttive precise per la costruzione della bussola. Ai perfezionamenti dello strumento sono in gran parte da attribuirsi le grandi scoperte di nuove terre, dalla metà del sec. XV in poi.
