Bussola nautica da tasca in ottone, firmata 5m LANCERS COMPASS, manifattura inglese degli anni venti. La bussola è dotata di coperchio e di anello per la catenella. Rosa su carta a otto venti. Buono stato perfettamente funzionante. Misure cm 4,7x1,5 – inches 1.8x0.5. I Greci e i Romani ignoravano ancora la possibilità di sfruttare i campi magnetici per orientarsi, mentre pare che questa possibilità fosse già in qualche modo nota ai Cinesi: intorno al 2600 a.C. l’imperatore Hoang-Ti riuscì a vincere in battaglia il principe Tchi-Yeou grazie a un carro “magico”, il See-Nan (carro indicante il sud). L’imperatore, grazie a questo congegno, individuò la via di fuga del nemico, nonostante il nemico l’avesse occultata tramite una coltre di fumo: sul carro era fissata una sagoma di forma umana di legno che ruotava su se stessa e che, con il braccio teso, puntava sempre verso sud (indicando il sud ovviamente era indicato nello stesso tempo anche il nord, ma il sud era considerato dai Cinesi il punto cardinale più importante). I Cinesi utilizzarono le loro scoperte relative ai campi magnetici anche come forma di intrattenimento e di spettacolo: lanciavano delle frecce magnetizzate come fossero dei dadi, e queste si allineavano in direzione sud-nord come per magia, cosa che impressionava e stupiva moltissimo gli spettatori.
