Rara bussola nautica da viaggio in ottone tornito completa di coperchio, rosa su carta a otto venti completa di cerchio goniometrico da incisione su lastra di rame. Manifattura inglese della metà del XIX secolo. Stato di conservazione molto buono, perfettamente funzionante. Diametro cm 4,5 – 1.8 inches, altezza cm 2 – 0.75 inches. L'ultima foto è la confezione regalo. I Greci e i Romani ignoravano ancora la possibilità di sfruttare i campi magnetici per orientarsi, mentre pare che questa possibilità fosse già in qualche modo nota ai Cinesi: intorno al 2600 a.C. l’imperatore Hoang-Ti riuscì a vincere in battaglia il principe Tchi-Yeou grazie a un carro “magico”, il See-Nan (carro indicante il sud). L’imperatore, grazie a questo congegno, individuò la via di fuga del nemico, nonostante il nemico l’avesse occultata tramite una coltre di fumo: sul carro era fissata una sagoma di forma umana di legno che ruotava su se stessa e che, con il braccio teso, puntava sempre verso sud (indicando il sud ovviamente era indicato nello stesso tempo anche il nord, ma il sud era considerato dai Cinesi il punto cardinale più importante. I primi accenni sull’uso in Europa di strumenti che sfruttavano la forza magnetica per orientarsi nella navigazione risalgono alla fine del XII secolo, soprattutto grazie alle conoscenze portate dai mercanti e dai navigatori arabi: ne troviamo cenni nell’opera di Alexander Neckam “De nominibus utensilium” e nelle opere di Guyot de Provins in cui la calamita viene definita “compagna del marinaio”. Anche nell’inventario di una nave siciliana del ‘200, la San Nicolò, si fa riferimento della presenza a bordo di una calamita e di una “bussola di ligno”.
