Bussola prismatica da tasca a liquido e da rilevamento firmata F. Barker’s & Son Makers London 1917, Pat n.29677/10, Futher Pat Pending, in uso agli ufficiali dell’esercito inglese durante la prima guerra mondiale. Si tratta di una bussola d'epoca di piccole dimensioni tipicamente usata nella navigazione a vela da diporto, quindi su imbarcazioni meno soggette a deviazione magnetica. Inoltre può essere tenuta in mano e quindi lontano dai campi magnetici della barca. E' dotata di un sistema di mira con traguardo e di una rosa dei venti goniometrica in modo da rendere possibile la misurazione dell'angolo tra la linea di mira e il nord indicato dall'ago magnetico. Buono stato, perfettamente funzionante completa di astuccio originale in cuoio. Diametro cm 5,5 – inches 2.2, spessore cm 3 – inches 1.2. F. Barker & Son fu una Società britannica fondata a Londra nel 1848 da Francis Barker (1820 1875) che inziò come apprendista diventando un abile meccanico di precisione acquisendo uan grande reputazione come valente e creativo artigiano arrivando ad acquistare l’azienda del suo ex datore di lavoro. Questo marchio diventò famoso per le forniture di strumenti di precisione alle forze alleate in Europa durante sia la prima che la seconda Guerra Mondiale. I Greci e i Romani ignoravano ancora la possibilità di sfruttare i campi magnetici per orientarsi, mentre pare che questa possibilità fosse già in qualche modo nota ai Cinesi: intorno al 2600 a.C. l’imperatore Hoang-Ti riuscì a vincere in battaglia il principe Tchi-Yeou grazie a un carro “magico”, il See-Nan (carro indicante il sud). L’imperatore, grazie a questo congegno, individuò la via di fuga del nemico, nonostante il nemico l’avesse occultata tramite una coltre di fumo: sul carro era fissata una sagoma di forma umana di legno che ruotava su se stessa e che, con il braccio teso, puntava sempre verso sud (indicando il sud ovviamente era indicato nello stesso tempo anche il nord, ma il sud era considerato dai Cinesi il punto cardinale più importante). I Cinesi utilizzarono le loro scoperte relative ai campi magnetici anche come forma di intrattenimento e di spettacolo: lanciavano delle frecce magnetizzate come fossero dei dadi, e queste si allineavano in direzione sud-nord come per magia, cosa che impressionava e stupiva moltissimo gli spettatori.
