About the Item
Elegant and timeless French table refractor telescope from the early 20th century. It features a circular turned wooden base and a shaft that supports the main body, held in place by two leather straps. The optical tube is cylindrical, made of wood and leather, with polished brass trim on the eyepiece (magnifying lens that directs the image to the eye) and objective (lens through which light enters).
Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, astronomy underwent a major change due to the rise of large glass reflectors and advances in optics. Large, precise reflectors began to be manufactured, designed for high-quality photographs. During this period, astronomy took advantage of technological advances, such as electronic CCD detectors, which improved the sensitivity of telescopes. Larger mirrors were also manufactured, allowing reflectors to be increased in aperture and aiding their durability and preservation. The use of telescopes spread both in professional research and in education, thus laying the foundations for contemporary astronomy.
Today, they are a highly valued collector's item. Perfect as a gift or as a decorative element for a classic and elegant office, living room, or wine cellar.
