End 19th century Large Nautical Mahogany Rudder with Eight Spokes Bronze Hub UK
About the Item
Large mahogany rudder with eight spokes with bronze hub. English manufacture of the end of the 19th century. Diameter 130 cm - inches 51.2, depth 15 cm - inches 5.9.
There are evidences showing that already in the third millennium BC, in ancient Egypt, people used wooden oars installed on one side of the boat, similar to those in use today. This solution has evolved over the helm square, in use in Europe until the Middle Ages. With increasing size of ships, square rudders were less effective, and were gradually replaced in the twelfth century by more robust models, mounted at the stern by a pin. The oldest description of a rudder of its kind in the West is a bas-relief of a church dating from about 1180, whereas in the East the oldest representation of the rudder is on the decoration of a vase dating back to 1000.
