The carrack or nao (both terms mean simply "ship") was a sailing ship with three or four masts that spread in the Mediterranean Sea during the 15th century. It was equipped with a foremast and a mainmast square sails and a lateen sail on mizzenmast, but also it brought the innovation of the stern flat and not round. The carracks were the first ships in Europe used in ocean navigation, large enough to tackle the rough seas, and roomy enough to carry provisions for long journeys.
