About the Item

Modellino in scala dei primi del ‘900 del sommergibile Ictineo II in zama rivestita di rame e ottone, progettato e costruito nel 1856 da Narciso Monturiol Estarriol (1819-1885). Buono stato. Misure cm 7x32x11 – inches 2.8x12.6x4.4 Narciso Monturiol Estarriol si dedicò al suo sogno di esploratore subacqueo, partendo dall’esperienza familiare nel campo della costruzione di botti e con la conoscenza delle peculiarità del legno di olivo, resistente e facilmente impermeabilizzabile. L’Ictineo II, nome derivato da due termini greci: pesce e nave, venne costruito nei cantieri della Nuevo Vulcano di Barcellona in legno di olivo con calatafaggio in pece, e rivestito esternamente di rame, dotato di motore a vapore, lungo 17 metri e dislocante ben 72 tonnellate, con 20 persone di equipaggio. Fu varato nel maggio del 1865 compiendo con successo un’immersione di 30 metri con 5 ore di durata di aria, questa fu la migliore prestazione tra le tante effettuate in vari paesi. La soluzione più innovativa studiata da Monturiol era una motore speciale a vapore, il vapore veniva generato da un composto chimico a base di perossido di manganese, zinco e clorato di potassio i quali reagendo aumentavano la temperatura, producendo vapore e ossigeno che veniva convogliato in bombole sia per respirarare a bordo che per l’illuminzazione interna. Questo sistema inedito di motore a vapore, venne utilizzato nel ‘900 da alcuni sommergibili tedeschi e inglesi che furono dotati di propulsione a vapore a partire dal perossido di idrogeno. Malgrado il successo e la presenza delle autorità militari al varo, il sommergibile non ebbe futuro, non riuscendo a trovare fondi ulteriori per le necessarie migliorie il progetto venne abbandonato. Sembra che questo esperimento abbia stimolato la fantasia di Jules Verne che non conosceva Narciso Monturiol personalmente, ma lo scrittore trasse ispirazione e suggestioni dai racconti dell’esperimento, tanto da riuscire a creare scenari con precisione al punto da renderli reali e credibili. Jules Verne riuscì con sensibilità e abilità romanzesca a trasformare un esperimento scientifico in un romanzo sulla navigazione sottomarina, 20.000 leghe sotto I mari venne pubblicato nel 1867. Narciso Monturiol è stato un ingegnere, intellettuale, politico e inventore spagnolo, è considerato uno dei pionieri della navigazione sottomarina.

A Highly Interesting Large Scale Shipbuilder's Model of the Sant'Antonio Steamship, Early 20th Century. This intricate model was almost certainly made as a shipbuilder's model for presentation to the original owner of the vessel. The name plate identifies her as the Sant'Antonio and details on the funnels reading OES presumably refer to the name of the shipping firm who owned her at this point in time. The vessel herself must have been enormous and this model, probably made to scale, is extremely large but it is also highly detailed. See for example the details of the rigging, the winches, the porthole-type cabin windows and the series of lifeboats. There are functioning doors and latches, moving propellors and the original paintwork, vividly rendered in blue, red and white.
