Chinese Wooden Block Printing Set, circa 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Chinese innovations in ink, block printing, and movable type fueled global advancements in printing technology, expanding the range of influence of the written word. These printing innovations can be attributed to Chinese Buddhist devotees, who embraced woodblock printing as an important vehicle to spread sutras and good spirits. Though the printing press is said to have been invented in China, it never offered the same efficiencies to Chinese culture as it did in the West, due to the near endless numbers of Chinese characters and the labor involved in manipulating them. Enclosed in a contemporary wooden frame, each of the miniature wood blocks included in this early 20th-century type set was hand-carved with a Chinese character. Each is a unique and wonderful curiosity, providing an unusual look at a moment in time. Each set contains approximately 70 individual tiles.

20th Century Spanish Silver Persian Trireme Ship, circa 1930
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Antique 20th century Spanish monumental solid silver model of a ship, called a "Nef", beautifully modelled on an ancient Persian Trireme, impressively large and very detailed. The two-masted galleon with pierced gallery and crew on board deck and a crows nests, the hull supported by a stand. Trireme is an ancient vessel and a type of galley that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars, manned with one man per oar. The early trireme was a development of the penteconter, an ancient warship with a single row of 25 oars on each side and of the bireme (Ancient Greek), a warship with two banks of oars, of Phoenician origin. The dominant warship in the Mediterranean during the 7th-4th centuries BC, after which it was largely superseded by the larger quadriremes and quinqueremes. Triremes played a vital role in the Persian Wars...
