Late 19th century Nautical Project by Charles Sibbick from the Uffa Fox Archives
About the Item
Project coming from the archives of Uffa Fox and never entered the commercial circuit depicting the sail plan of a boat by C. Sibbick. Measures: 57 x 46.5 (H) cm - 22.44 x 18.30 (H) inches.
Charles Sibbick, born in England in 1849, began his career as manager of a construction company and sometimes he built some boats. In 1888 he decided to devote himself exclusively to the design and production of racing yachts and pleasure boats. Sibbick had designed and built 300 boats in his yard when in 1912, he was 62 years old, he disappeared mysteriously.
Uffa Fox was born in the Isle of Wight in 1898 and grew up in Cowes. At the end of the school he began an apprenticeship for 7 years at the Saunders SE shipyards, during which time he learned the rudiments of sailing, shipbuilding and design. Uffa Fox was a brilliant designer but also a lover of adventures at sea. During the Second World War he conceived the idea of the Airborne Lifeboat, a ship loaded under the planes to be launched by parachute to survivors of aircraft in distress. Uffa has been married three times. His first wife was Alma, who has played an important role in his career. In 1941 he married Cherry and then in 1956 a French lady, Yvonne Bernard, a curious fact because the lady did not speak English, nor Uffa spoke French.
